How to Sew curtains

Creating custom window treatments for your home is a project that will really add to the beauty any room. While it might seem intimidating at first, learning how to sew curtains is a very managable project, even if you are not very experienced with a sewing machine. Curtains are really just flat pieces of fabric with various hems and pockets, and are much less complicated than they seem. As long as you have finished your measurements and know the desired finished size of your curtains you are ready to sew! The directions below require an eight inch lower hem, total of six inch side hems, and a three inch top hem.

Starting with the lower hem, turn up the bottom edge of the fabric eight inches so that raw edges or backsides of the fabric are touching, and pin every few inches. Press the folded edge. After removing the pins, turn up the bottom edge four inches to create a double hem. This will help your curtain to hang better. Pin along the fold, press the fold and sew to create your lower hem.

Next, fold the side seams in three inches, and pin along the edge. Press the side folds, and then sew down the sides of your curtains. Again a double hem is advisable to help the curtains hang smoother, so fold the side hems over onto themselves, and pin, press and sew again.

The last step of how to sew curtains is for your top hem. Measuring from the bottom edge a distance equal to the finished height desired. Mark with pins placed horizontally every few inches across the top of the curtain to mark the desire height. Measure three inches above the pins, and trim the extra fabric above the three inches. Then fold down the top edge, with the wrong sides in, facing each other, so that the pins are at the fold itself. Remove the top pins from the fold, and press along the fold. Remove the pins, fold under the raw edge, pin, and press again. Finally, sew up your top hem.

Congratulations! You now know how to sew curtains, and have completed your first set. Choose your rings or hooks, attach them to the top of your curtain and you are ready to hang them.
